It’s perfectly natural to want to make yourself seem perfect in an interview setting. You want to seem like the perfect candidate, so it may like common sense to be the “yes man” when discussing your goals and qualifications. Or perhaps to even tell a white lie here or there to guarantee a good impression. It is your dream job, after all. However, from the bottom of our recruiter hearts, we beg you: please don’t do this. Just be honest.
It is our job as recruiters to ensure the best possible fit for BOTH our jobseekers and our employers. We can’t do that if you aren’t truthful with us! We take the time to speak with you about your goals and interests so we can accurately match you with a job you’re going to be happy AND successful in. Saying you’re willing to do something that you’re not, or have experience in something that you don’t, not only damages your own ability to thrive in a role, but also makes us look silly.
If you only want to travel within your neighboring states – Tell us!
If you have never given an IV injection and needles make you queasy – Tell us!
If the thought of scrubbing down stall fronts is simply traumatizing – Tell us!
If you’ve got exotic peacock furniture that you can’t bear to part with – Tell us!
If your crazy cousin Earl is dead-set on moving with you to your next job – TELL US!
We can’t help you if we don’t know your honest truth and situation. And we would always rather hear it from you than from our client 2 interviews and an offer later when you turn down their job because you thought they’d make an exception for your 14 llamas – and they didn’t. There are jobs out there for EVERY person – just because your unique situation may not work for the first job we discuss, we can ALWAYS reroute you to one that will!
