Job Applications 101: Its all about the Resume

Job Applications 101 - Tips to help you get a leg up in the application process

We all know the equine industry functions a little bit differently from most. Word of mouth hiring and a strong personal network have paved the way forward for equestrians for years. But as our industry evolves, and quality opportunities get more and more competitive, the need for a resume when job hunting is growing! Think of it like a good, firm handshake – your resume is the first impression a prospective employer will have of you – so you might as well make it good!

Now, we’re realistic – no one hiring a stable hand is going to be expecting a CEO level resume – but a basic, organized list of your previous jobs is tremendously helpful in the hiring process!

The three key things we want to see when looking at a resume are:

  1. Job Title, Company Name, Location
  2. Duration – How long did you work there?
  3. A couple sentences or bullet points about the duties/tasks you performed there

Putting these basic points on paper with your name and contact information is a quick and easy way to set yourself up for success in hiring. It saves you from having to answer 800 questions about your background & skills, and allows prospective employers to get a good feel of your qualifications and suitability for their role! At the end of the day, it saves your time AND theirs!

And don’t forget to keep it current! You could be the absolute unicorn applicant for the position you’re applying to, but if your work history on your resume is 10 years out of date – it isn’t going to work in your favor. Take the time to make sure that your resume is current & accurate before applying to jobs – it will absolutely be worth it!

Now, if you ARE out there applying for the CEO level roles – this probably goes without saying – but making sure that your resume is present, accurate, and carefully tailored to the role you’re hoping to achieve is VITAL. We can talk more about this later, but at the most basic level, you’re going to want to be sure to highlight the skills and qualities of your background that best relate to the duties of the job you want to secure. If you’re someone who “wears all the hats” in your current role – absolutely include that – but making sure to highlight the most relevant pieces of your day-to-day life on your resume will always help to put your best foot forward!
